Profile Complex By Elements using profile from surface, but with gaps

I have generated a profile from several proposed surfaces along an alignment. These surfaces are various lanes of approaching roadways. Since the alignment I'm working on right now is a circular one, it crosses into one lane, then crosses into second, then winds around again and crosses into the first lane.

Below is a screenshot of the profile. The purple highlights one profile element (though it looks like it might be two elements) representing where the alignment crosses the inside lane. The white part between the purple highlights represents the surface in the outer lane. I'd like to make a complex profile through this area, but I'm not sure how to make this happen.

I'm trying to create a complex profile, so I select the left part of this element, then the middle part, and then I select the next element and then it breaks.

Actually, when using Profile Complex By Elements, when prompted to Locate First Element, when I select any of the elements that were profiled from surface, the prompt immediately changes to Accept Complex.

Any ideas? I guess I need to split some of these elements using a rather vanilla tool, but I'm not even sure if that would work because of this last problem I mentioned.
