InRoads Vertical Alignmnet Work Flow

New to InRoads, but I am trying to create profile views based the center lines of levees and floodwalls. I have been following some online tutorials, but I believe might have missed a step in the work flow. The follwing is a list of steps I took to get where I am stuck now. Any help would be appreciated. Microstation V8i 08.11.07.443

Imported GIS shapefiles of survey points (Applications>Map>Activate Map  then  File>Import>GIS Data Type)

Drew centerlines using place line and smart line. This was all done on a flat plane. Elevation = 0ft for entire graphics length

imported a rectangular surface from graphics using InRoads Window (File>Import>Surface)

imported geometery horizontal alignments from graphics (File>Import>Geometry)

adjusted and added stationing to horizontal alignments (Geometry>View Geometry>Stationing)

added new vertical alignment to horizontal alignment (Right Click On Geometry>New>Vertical Alignment)

created a blank profile window and data (Evaluation>Profile>Create Profile>Apply)

changed settings to make sure elevations would show profile, and selected the previously imported surface

attempted to add VPI with dynamic settings (Geometry>Vertical Curve Set>Add PI)

At this point I get a message that says "Profile Not Found" and will not add anything. Been working at this by trial and error, but can't figure it out.
