Civil pop-up tool behavior

Using Power Geopak SS3.

I've known for a while that if AccuSnap setting Identify Elements Automatically is enabled,

  1. elements across the board flash as you mouse over (true since as far back as I can remember using Microstation)
  2. when you select a Civil element, a context-sensitive pop-up toolbar shows up (true since OpenRoads/Geopak SS3).
  3. when using non-Civil tools: when you DP any element, it is immediately selected for manipulation with whatever tool you're using. Before you send the DP, you have an opportunity to send Resets to cycle through the stack of elements.
  4. when using Civil tools: when you DP any element, it is immediately selected for manipulation with whatever tool you're using. Before you send the DP, you have an opportunity to send Resets to cycle through the stack of elements, except if you send one Reset more than the number of elements in the stack, you might trigger the end of that tool's use, which means you might have to go through several additional steps.

If AccuSnap setting IEA is disabled,

  1. elements across the board do not flash as you mouse over.
  2. when you select a Civil element, a context-sensitive pop-up toolbar does not show up.
  3. when using non-Civil tools: when you DP any element, you have an opportunity to send Resets as needed to cycle through all the elements in the stack you just clicked and find the correct element.
  4. when using Civil tools: when you DP any element in a stack, you really have no idea what you just clicked unless you went through with successive tentative snaps to identify your target. (I am leery to do this as I've been too frequently burned by exception errors that are apparently--but irregularly--triggered when I snap too many times.)

Some of us use the option because they prefer the highlight. Some of us prefer not to use it. But if we don't use it, then we get no context-sensitive pop-up toolbar, which means that we have to switch tabs in use in order to access the tools because we're mostly working with Microstation tools rather than Civil tools. Or that means we have to switch more frequently between corridor modeling and terrain model tools.

I know that I've complained about this, and apparently it's written up as a suggestion or something, but I thought I'd reiterate for good measure. Plus, my following observation refers to this knowledge.

Because it also sounded like the developer wasn't sure how to change this feature, I have a new observation about this:

  1. Disable Identify Elements Automatically.
  2. Select one or more Civil elements (mandatory step, from what I can tell).
  3. Do a tentative snap on any one Civil element in the selection. (In my example, I'm snapping to a complex plan element.)
  4. A context-sensitive toolbar pops up, contrary to my expectation (because IEA is disabled and it normally shows up only when IEA is enabled).
  5. Click the Open Profile Model button, and select an appropriate view.
  6. See that the profile view runs over only that segment of the element.

The profile view seems to use only what profiles may be associated with that segment that you snapped to (assumed to be that segment as it appears in the DependsOn list). In my case, the only profile that shows up is the existing profile, and probably only because I have an active terrain model. It does not feature the depending complex element's active profile.

I wonder if this sheds any light on how to improve the algorithm for whether the context-sensitive pop-up toolbar is triggered. Ideally, an improvement where all we have to do is maybe Ctrl+DP or Ctrl+Reset (or whatever we want) and we can bring up any pop-up menu on demand without waiting on a delay (to avoid being annoyed because the pop-up menu gets in the way).
